The other cassette seemed to have crisper fidelity to my ears, although a few songs were either truncated or missing, compared to this copy. This “alt” copy was more complete, although the fidelity drops a notch. Also, I’m not clear as to how both sides of either tape could be from the same show. What was on side A of either tape makes it clear that Bob’s voice is shot; he alludes to that after a few songs, on account of making himself hoarse at a wrestling match the previous night. However, on side B, he is in full voice. I had e-mailed DG about this back on Jan 28 2011, but he wasn’t able to shed any light on this: [from my e-mail to DG] There are two cassettes which are both dated 12/13/80, and which both have a couple songs performed with The Hypstrz at the beginning. One cassette has "All Tensed Up" at the beginning (it sounds like the recording deck or mics might have been getting bounced around quite a bit), then the two tracks w/the Hypstrz, then a few minutes of audience, as though at the end of a set, then "Outside", followed by "Don't Try It", and continues with a full set. The second cassette has the same date on the label, but starts with the two Hypstrz tracks, then "Don't Try It", and the set. "Outside" is not on this cassette. From "Don't Try It" on, both tapes seem identical, although the sound quality of the second cassette seems much cleaner and crisper to my ears. I'm thinking that either two decks were running in sequence, or one of these tapes is a copy. Any ideas as to which might be the master, and which might be the copy? Ordinarily, I would hazard a guess that the first tape would be the master, since it contains a little more material at the beginning, but the sounds quality of the second cassette sounds much sharper, and is a good candidate for being a master. - - - - UPDATE / 2016 - follow-up from DG: I'm pretty sure I sometimes consolidated cassettes by copying taped shows from one cassette to another (I know, I know!). Then I'd reuse the original cassette and tape a new show over it. So if a set was shorter than the previous set on that side, some of the previous show would have been heard after the new set ended. - - - - The DG Tapes.
