I can safely say that when I recived this tape in the mail, there were no such things as .mp3s yet - all the same, I'm posting some images below of the spectral and frequency analysis of one of my files. I had actually downloaded the banned torrent, as I was hoping it would prove to be an upgrade to my 20-or-so year old tape, and save me the trouble of digitizing my cassete, but alas, that is not what happened after all. Just for kicks, I compared the two versions, and the notable difference to my ears is that the lossy version seems to run a bit slow, and is super-bass heavy. This version is a bit hissy, which seems to rule out the possibility of it being a 1st-gen, anyway, but in a loud/hard/fast kind of way, I think this recording holds up pretty well. Of course, if someone turns up with a better copy with known lineage, please announce it here, and I'll either ban this or re-list it with a contrst clause. As was the case with so many tape traders way back in the day, the person I received this from negected to include any lineage information. The trader lived in Madison or Milwaukee, and I'm pretty sure they weren't the actual taper, so my best guess is that this is a 2nd-gen tape. For a long time, I seemed to think this show didn't sound that great, but listening to it again after all this time, I can safely say I must have been high or something. This show is nothing short of amazing!! Not only do they sound spot-on and in control throughout the set, they sound like they really mean it, man...! Seriously, a high-energy, extremely impassioned performance from a band that was on top of their game, at a peak time in their existence. To my ears, though, the tape itself sounded a bit off, and I borrowed my wife's classically-trained ears to help establish what seemed to be an appropriate speed for these files. We also employed one of my keyboards, and then matched certain vocal nuances to the official album tracks, and the consensus was that the pitch needed to be shifted -25.0 cents. I've listed the revised running lengths here in brackets, and the original running times after that, in brackets. cassette received in trade (POSSIBLE 2nd-gen. copy > Azimuth-optimized analog/digital transfer to hard drive, using CDWav editor to capture the audio, and also to split the .wav file into tracks). SoundForge processes applied: DC Offset; pitch shift: -25.0 cents [real-time; accuracy: 3 (high); duration NOT preserved; anti-alias filter NOT applied]; channel level adjustments (average +0.75/ +2.0dB per channel). Traders Little Helper: SBE check/repair; .flac conversion (level 8) ********************************************************************************************************************** A KIND OF DISCLAIMER AGAINST POTENTIAL BOOTLEGGERS... I had taken a bit of a break from posting anything, due to getting a lot of flak about my no-artwork "policy". I'm willing to give it another try, and see how it goes. If people are interested in hearing what I dig out of the archives, then please do not post artwork on the torrents I post, and please don't try to open a big debate about it in the comments section. Either of those things will be the quickest way to convince me that I'm wasting my time sharing this stuff with people. Do what you want in your own space, but please respect my one simple request on the torrents I post, okay? It is my express interest to provide the best quality archival material I have available, but the notion of people creating "artwork" for these recordings has little to do with the work I do as an archivist. It also easily enables the ready packaging of archival recordings as illegitimate bootlegs, which I do not support. I am not in the business of manufacturing a "product", but simply contributing to a particular type of cultural history. If people are going to make artwork for my recordings, I don't want to see it attached to this or any of my torrents, or that will seriously be the end of me putting up anything else from my archives. If this is going to be an issue for anyone, I'm done sharing my recordings, period. I'm not interested in anyone's opinions on the subject, and this is not a matter that's up for discussion. If you disagree with my opinion, why waste your time or anyone else's posting about it? ********************************************************************************************************************** Now, back to the fun stuff - just enjoy the music, okay?
